Mega Man 2

I've never been very fond of Mega Man 2, but that's largely because I've been spoiled by better looking platformers. In spite of having been reared on a NES, somehow I only got around to playing Mega Man 2 much, much later on the pc, as an emulated port. At that time, I was dabbling in other kinds of games; platformers to me were a love affair that had ended with gaming's sudden, utter disavowal that the genre had once been the king of all genres. But now, having played through some of the recent releases, with Rayman Legends being the greatest single platformer to have been released in the 21st century, I decided to give Mega Man 2 another try. It has been consistently ranked as the greatest of the Mega Man games over the years, and I now realize why. The colors, the equal emphasis on gunplay and jumping, and the killer soundtrack, plus the freedom to choose in what order you play the stages and the power-ups: it makes for an amazing experience. My ten year old self would have flipped if it could have played this. Amazing, amazing experience.
